Karefa-Johnson is part of a new generation of creatives shaping the world of
fashion. As a fashion editor, Karefa-Johnson is a key collaborator in the
making of fashion images, images that saturate and shape popular culture.
Karefa-Johnson uses this medium to spark dialogue about race, size and access,
contributing a compelling point of view to fashion via publications such as
Vogue and Garage. Here, learn more about her work.
The
18th century figure Marie Antoinette is the subject of the 2006
biopic directed by Sofia Coppola. Coppola approaches her story with empathy, portraying
her life amid the opulent yet claustrophobic world of Versailles. This Autumn,
she returns to the big screen with the story of another famous woman, albeit
contemporary, Priscilla Presley, based on the memoir, Elvis and me. The
film spans the course of her relationship with Elvis, from their first encounter to
the end of their marriage, touching on themes of female identity and adolescence.
The themes Coppola revisits with this new film certainly hold a universal
appeal.
A highlight of the upcoming Fashion month is Designer Phoebe
Philo’s return to fashion with her new eponymous label. The excitement has
been palpable in the fashion world since the announcement earlier this year. It’s
been 5 years since her wildly successful tenure at Celine which has continued
to influence modern representations of femininity. She is a designer who
understands women’s practical and aesthetic needs.
Here, explore the work of the Participante Muse.
Mati Diop, is a French-Senegalese filmmaker and actress.
Her debut feature,
Atlantics, won the grand prix at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival.
Atlantics is a vital and compelling piece of cinema. Diop’s storytelling challenges
the often inhumane handling of migration. Set in Dakar, Senegal, Diop’s characters - and the wider community - are shaped by an unfavourable socioeconomic
context. It’s the catalyst for a generation of Senegalese youth embarking
on treacherous journeys across the Atlantic, in search of a better life in Europe.
With the on-going migration discourse in Europe, we wanted to highlight the work of this Participante Muse. Here, explore her work.
As fashion takes inspiration from ballet this season -
there were numerous interpretations of the pointe shoe and references to ballet
attire on the runway - we wanted to highlight a Participante from
the ballet world.
